The Special Litigation and Advocacy Project works on some of the most cutting-edge civil rights issues we face in our nation today. The Project is driven by a recognition that the racial justice problems we face today are rapidly evolving and increasingly complex. This Project helps ensure the organization is responsive to pressing demands that are not addressed by other Projects inside the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law or matters that are otherwise cross-cutting.
Core areas that currently anchor this Project’s work include safeguarding the First Amendment rights of people engaged in peaceful demonstration and protest around civil rights crises; working to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 Census in coordination with the Voting Rights Project; and addressing racial disparities in access to municipal services, among other issues. The Project uses a community-centered approach to develop litigation, implement advocacy campaigns and launch rapid response programs.
