In collaboration with partners, we will be filing a class action related to a state’s failure to provide indigent defendants with effective assistance of counsel in criminal cases. If we prevail, it would be a game-changer for thousands of people accused of crimes in the state, as well as the future of the criminal justice system there.
We expect the filing may inspire people who are currently in the criminal justice system to call us asking for help or to share their related experiences. We are seeking volunteers to staff a centralized intake line at the Lawyers’ Committee’s Office (1401 New York Ave., NW) the week of February 6th to help explain the case and document these callers’ stories. Training and additional details about the case will be provided on-site before you get started.
