Policy Associate Position
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee), one of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations based in Washington D.C., is seeking a bright, creative, enthusiastic, organized, and highly effective Policy Associate for the Public Policy Project. The Policy Associate will be expected to perform a broad range of substantive and administrative tasks. This position will require some travel. The Policy Associate will report directly to the Director of the Public Policy Project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conducting factual and legal research and extensive analysis of civil rights issues in legislation; executive branch and regulatory agency policies and practices; demographic, social, and economic trends; background research on Members of Congress, Executive branch nominees, etc.
• Drafting substantive policy materials including congressional testimony, letters to agencies and the Hill, blog posts, fact sheets, talking points, and op-eds
• Monitoring legal and Congressional publications and news media for coverage of issues affecting the work of the projects and drafting, editing, and posting commentary on news items
• Representing the organization at meetings, events, conferences, calls and webinars and providing substantive reports to staff not in attendance
• Planning and coordinating briefings, conferences and events both locally and in target states
• Working with Communications Team to promote work of core projects and major campaigns
• Managing coalition email groups, collaborative documents, meeting agendas and minutes, action alerts, and Congressional staff contact list
• Providing general administrative support, as needed
Experience and Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• 2-3 years of work in public policy, particularly on civil rights and racial justice issues
• Strong understanding of the legislative process – Hill experience a plus
• Able to handle competing demands simultaneously
• Able to accept direction and work in a team setting but also able to thrive working independently
• Knowledge of research tools such as LexisNexis, Westlaw, PACER, Congressional Quarterly, Knowledgis, preferred
