WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law urges Senators to approve the nomination of Sparkle Sooknanan to the United States District Court of the District of Columbia.
Statement from Alex Ault, policy counsel at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:
“Ms. Sooknanan’s legal career has been inspiring. She is an accomplished lawyer with a strong record on civil rights and practical experience helping defend our rights and liberties within the federal government. Sooknanan would be a terrific addition to the judicial branch.
Her experience at the Department of Justice on a variety of issues will be valuable to draw from as a federal judge. As the second highest ranking official in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Sooknanan helped lead important work on hate crimes, housing, employment, education, and voting rights. In her prior role as the Deputy Associate Attorney General, she helped oversee the Justice Department’s Civil Division, Civil Rights Division, Antitrust Division, Environmental and Natural Resources Division, and the Office on Violence Against Women.
Ms. Sooknanan is no stranger to hard work. She graduated summa cum laude while attending law school at night so she could work during the day.”
