WASHINGTON D.C. – As called by the Associated Press, Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States. In response to this news, Damon T. Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, released the following statement:
“Today, we acknowledge the results of the 2024 presidential election. Make no mistake: Trump may have won, but he does not have a mandate to erode constitutional rights, weaponize the judiciary, or enact policies from the reckless Project 2025 playbook that would rollback the hard-won rights of many, especially Black and Brown communities.
“The Lawyers’ Committee is deeply proud of the millions of voters who, despite the obstacles placed in their way by anti-democracy forces, stood strong and went to the polls to have their voices heard. Their dedication to their families and communities is a true and profound testament to the spirit of democracy. We are also greatly appreciative of our Election Protection Coalition, staff, and hotline volunteers who worked tirelessly to safeguard the rights of voters and their access to the ballot box.
“It is on behalf of these communities, voters, and volunteers that the Lawyers’ Committee will continue to put our vision into action to achieve racial justice and work to make the promise of our democracy a reality for Black communities and other people of color.
“As the threat of further rollbacks to civil rights looms over all of us, the Lawyers’ Committee stands firm in our commitment to justice and equity. For over 60 years, we have fought against efforts to weaken and dismantle civil rights Together, we will continue this fight.”
