WASHINGTON, DC- In response to reports that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is seeking to remove provisions from the “new NAFTA” that would make it harder to hold Internet companies accountable for unlawful acts, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law applauds the Speaker’s decision and issues the following statement:

“As we try to confront online voter suppression and election interference, data-driven discrimination in economic opportunities, consumer privacy abuses, and a rise in white supremacist activity targeting African Americans and other marginalized communities, we need all options and tools to be on the table,” said David Brody, Counsel and Senior Fellow for Privacy & Technology. “Sneaking language from the Communications Decency Act into foreign trade agreements, including but not limited to the USMCA, makes it harder to have an honest discussion about what kind of Internet we want to have and how to protect online civil rights. It serves only to insulate powerful tech companies from accountability for the serious harms they cause to communities of color.”
