Washington, D.C. – Today, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law announced a $1 million donation from Hogan Lovells, a leading global law firm, to support the work of the non-partisan, national civil rights organization and leader in the nation working to confront racial discrimination faced by African Americans and other racial minorities.

Hogan Lovells’ generous gift comes at a critical time, when the Lawyers’ Committee is engaged in active litigation across the country to combat voter suppression, secure a fairer criminal justice system, and confront the intensifying hate crime crisis. The organization also works to promote fair housing opportunity and, with Hogan Lovells as co-counsel, recently secured a landmark fair housing settlement against Nassau County, New York that will provide greater access to housing opportunity for New Yorkers. The firm’s support will help advance future litigation efforts that safeguard the rights of our nation’s most vulnerable communities.

“This extraordinary support, providing both financial support and expanded pro bono resources, is crucial to help us meet the pressing challenges of our time,” said Kristen Clarke, President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “Hogan Lovells has long demonstrated its institutional commitment to promoting equal justice under law. Our hope is that their generous action will spur other law firms and corporations to similarly provide much-needed support for the work of non-partisan organizations in this era.”

In this historic moment, where the need to protect civil rights is so crucial, these additional resources will make a considerable impact on the organization’s ability to carry out its work and to put needed resources where they will have the most profound impact. The firm’s donation will allow the Lawyers’ Committee to expand its partnership with Hogan Lovells on issues including, but not limited to, protecting the voting rights of all Americans, fighting for a fairer criminal justice system and addressing racial barriers to economic opportunity.

“We are proud to support the work of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law,” said Stan Brown, a Hogan Lovells’ Senior Lawyer who has co-counseled on major civil rights litigations with the Lawyers’ Committee. “They are one of the country’s leading civil rights organizations and, by collaborating with them, we can help to protect those who need legal representation the most. Hogan Lovells has long been committed to fighting for equal justice, and our work with the Lawyers’ Committee furthers that goal.”

Hogan Lovells’ donation embodies the spirit of President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 call to the private bar to help address racial discrimination. The Lawyers’ Committee, a nonpartisan, nonprofit racial justice organization, was formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. Now in its 56th year, the Lawyers’ Committee is continuing its quest to “Move America Toward Justice.” The principal mission of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice for all, particularly in the areas of criminal justice, fair housing and community development, economic justice, educational opportunities, and voting rights.
